I suppose it was even radical for Paul to suggest that both men and women should submit to one another. That was the first step. It is the final lesson of the Sunday School year and an excellent way to close the topic of covenants between people. Over The last few weeks the lessons have focused on covenants between people. This week is a little different. The premise is the same. While this text does not mention two specific people we are still dealing with two people in the context of a covenant based in marriage.

Part of what I will focus on today is the mutuality of the covenant based in marriage. Our lesson text is taken from a section of the fifth chapter that is focused on the Christian household. Regardless of those controversies, the central message of this passage is mutual submission to one another and the lordship of Christ over all of us.

One additional note of importance mentioned in the NISB is how this. No modern Christian can hold such a view. Our lesson this week is entitled A Covenant of Mutual Love. The importance of this mutual love should be the central focus with the lordship of Jesus Christ as the overarching guide.

Christ's suffering is never in vain for God's great plan for humanity prospered in His hands. You are part of His fruits, so do not decay, or remain invalid! We are not left in the dark as to what the life and death of the Messiah would be.

Jesus has come to meet that exact specification. God specified that the Messiah would suffer and die. The Jews obviously expected otherwise, but Jesus came as the suffering servant.Sunday, August 25, Lesson Text: Ephesians Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the Savior of the body.

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies.

He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.Sunday, August 18, The time of the judges in Israel, the years between Joshua and Samuel, were marked by widespread lawlessness and disinterest in spiritual values see Judges Nevertheless, pockets of righteousness could be found here and there in Israel.

Sometime during the period of the judges, Elimelech which means God is Kinghis wife Naomi meaning pleasantand their two sons Mahlon which means sickly and Chilion which means piningwere living in Bethlehem in Judah.

To escape a famine there, Elimelech and his family moved to Moab see Rutha land of idol worshipers. But leaving a place in an attempt to outguess God, so to speak, does not bring relief. The death of Elimelech in Moab is evidence of that see Ruth Instead of returning to Bethlehem, they married Moabite women.

While marrying Moabite women technically was not against the letter of the law see Deuteronomyit certainly was against the spirit of the law.

All she had were her two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah.

Sunday, August 25, 2019: “A Covenant of Love” Practical Points for Discussion (The ISSL Curriculum)

At some point, Naomi received news that God had visited Judah and the famine was over, so she decided to return to Bethlehem and her two daughters-in-law decided to go with her, but she thought it was best for them to stay in Moab with their own people see Ruth Orpah decided to return to Moab, but Ruth committed to follow Naomi to her home or anywhere she decided to live.

Naomi realized that Ruth was committed to her and they both returned to Bethlehem see Ruth After being in Bethlehem for a while, Naomi realized that they could provide for themselves by gleaning in the fields during harvest season. He is kind and protective to Ruth as she seeks to survive by gleaning leftovers in the barley fields see Ruth Naomi tells Ruth to stay close to the young women of Boaz as they glean in the fields.

Our lesson begins with chapter 3.

She realized that it was her responsibility to care for her daughter-in-law. Undoubtedly, Naomi had noticed the attention Boaz paid to Ruth. Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshing floor.

Realizing this, Naomi took the initiative in quietly and artfully arranging this marriage. The wheat stalks were crushed either by hand or by oxen, and the valuable grain inner kernels was separated from the worthless chaff the outside shell.

The floor was made from rock or soil and located outside the village, usually on an elevated site where the winds could blow away the lighter chaff when the crushed wheat was thrown into the air which was called winnowing see Isaiah ; Luke Boaz probably spent the night beside the threshing floor in order to wait for his turn to thresh grain which was often done at night since the days were spent harvesting.

For Ruth, the most important duty of kinship was the law of levirate marriage see Deuteronomy Once Ruth was ready, she was to head down to the threshing floor where Boaz would be.

Power For Living

The reason for secrecy was this: it would protect the reputation of both Boaz and Ruth.Hello Sunday school teachers, preachers, and students!

Some important words to consider from this text include:. Last week our lesson came from Ruth chapter 3. After realizing Boaz had shown interest in Ruth, Naomi knew exactly what to do. Naomi knew the customs of the barley harvest and as the reaping season drew to a close she gave her daughter-in-law specific instructions on how to conduct herself. In verse three Naomi told Ruth to wash, anoint herself with perfume, and to put on her best clothes.

Naomi told her to go to the threshing floor but not to make herself known to Boaz until after he has finished eating and drinking. Naomi knew exactly what she was doing. Verse eight told us that at midnight Boaz was startled discovering a woman laying at his feet. I also noted that Boaz is likely a pious man given his greeting in chapter two verse four. Verse ten helps us understand just how wise Naomi was.

He knows how loving and faithful Ruth has been toward Naomi. Now he sees that same kind of love and faithfulness toward him by Ruth. In verse eleven we saw the covenant to marry that Boaz made to Ruth. In verse nine Ruth proposes marriage.
